Reflections.
The article A look at NKU’s Visual Arts Print Lab: New leadership, future plans was my first published piece. I was still apprehensive on how to write an article worth publishing, but it was a great learning experience and really boosted my confidence. I was able to tread lightly at first and get used to what it means to write journalistically, and not for hypothetical assignments. Despite not being the most exciting piece, it will always mean a lot to me because it shows where I started as a journalist.
The article about the Student Juried Exhibition was the first one that I wrote in my last semester of school. At this time, I was ready to push myself and show off the work that I was capable of. With this story specifically, I ended up going in a direction I never could have even planned. During my interview with the director of galleries, she offered to bring in two students for me to speak to about their gallery installation internship. This allowed me to take the story in a whole new, and more interesting direction.
Center for Student Engagement looking to boost campus involvement was a great opportunity for me to take what I learned from my first article and apply it. I moved out of my comfort zone and went after an interesting, backside angle for a story. I wanted to show the faces of who organizes all of the events at NKU and what all goes into that. I do however wish that I had an additional source for this story. Perhaps a student who works with student engagement so I could have a student perspective.
The profile on Miki Abraham was a fun one to write. I enjoyed being able to talk with interviewees that I otherwise would have had no other contact with. This profile allowed me the opportunity to learn how to collaborate with people who are living in a different place as you and being able to navigate that conversation. For Abraham specifically, we did a phone call interview and she was incredibly helpful with giving me names of other sources and providing incredible details of her time at NKU.
This third story of the semester, A tailgate…at NKU!? was my most successful. I feel like everything I have learned is shown off in this article. I conducted great interviews, including a behind the scenes look at the preparation for the event, as well as reactions to the event. I loved that the photo was my own and I got to be involved in every aspect of this article. For another school project, I also filmed a news package for this event. Being able to photograph, film, and write for this event was a great feeling as I was able to use my skills in all three of these forms of media.
Faculty cuts in the School of that Arts was the last story that I wrote for The Northerner. It was a difficult one to write as it involved sensitive topics of individuals losing their jobs. Not only that, but communicating with higher ups in the university was intimidating to say the least. They were all kind and respectful, but because of the nature of this topic, they were unable to share a lot with us. This is also my first story that I had a co-writer, news editor Emily Sisk. I am very appreciative of her help as well as the other editors because they really made sure that this story got published in the end.
